Thinking of buying in the UK — prepare now

The four things you should sort before you even start looking at properties. Most crew skip step three.

Every season we meet crew who found the right property and lost it because the groundwork wasn’t done. Four steps, in order:

  1. Agreement in principle — with a lender that accepts crew income, not just any lender.
  2. Deposit positioning — money in the right currency, in the right account, with a paper trail.
  3. Residency check — your SDLT surcharge and mortgage options both hinge on it. This is the step most crew skip.
  4. Solicitor on standby — instructing conveyancing on day one saves two to three weeks.

All four can be arranged from the boat. That’s rather the point of CrewFO.
